    Tooth Whitening

Here is what you need to know about tooth whitening. The procedure is noninvasive and takes 7-10 days to complete. You can whiten teeth during the day or night. Some systems are over night, others are during the day. They vary from 30 min to 8 hours per day. The whitening gel needs to be in close approximation to the enamel surface to be effective. Depending on the product you choose there may be prefabricated trays with preloaded gel or we will take impressions of your teeth from which custom trays are then fabricated. These trays are used to hold the whitening gel. The gel is loaded into the trays, placed over your teeth, the excess is removed and left in place for the desired time. Today's whitening products come in varying concentrations and are more effective than ever. If your teeth darken over time due to food or smoking you can do a touch up whitening with a few days treatment .

Teeth accumulate years of yellowing food stains, (chromagen's), from smoking or foods like coffee, tea, dark soft drinks, red wine, etc. all of which become absorbed into enamel and can now be removed! The whitening gel penetrates into the enamel and oxidizes these chromagens' to remove them. Your teeth stay whiter for years. Yellow stained teeth tend to whiten the most effectively while fillings and crowns do not whiten. Teeth are naturally darker along the gum line so these areas may require more time to lighten as will discolorations due to tetracycline staining*. These areas may remain slightly darker. To get the most out of whitening your teeth refrain from foods or tobacco products that will have a tendency to restain your teeth. If your natural teeth are darker than existing crowns consider whitening to brighten your entire smile.

If sensitivity occurs during the whitening process then apply every second or third day instead of every day. Fruits and juices high in citric acids can cause sensitivity. If you notice temperature discomfort, soreness of the gums, lips or throat for more than 2 days or that progressively worsen call your dental office. These side effects should subside in 1-3 days after treatment has been discontinued.

Do not - use whitening products while you are pregnant or lactating.

  • eat while you are wearing your whitening trays.
  • use tobacco products while whitening your teeth.

Regular dental checkups and cleanings are important, before and after whitening your teeth, to maintain a healthy smile.

Our office provides a variety of tooth whitening systems to meet your particular needs. Before you decide on any particular system, feel free to schedule an initial dental exam so that we can inform you of what whitening system will work best for you or mention it when you have your professional cleaning.

I look forward to taking care of your dental needs. Ken Crossman.

*Antibiotics such as tetracycline can severely discolour developing teeth in children. For this reason tetracycline should be avoided in children under the age of 12 when possible.
