    HOW TEETH GROW ADVICE HOME

We usually enter the world without teeth. Some babies do have teeth but it is rare. Usually the lower front incisors come in at 6 months and our entire baby or primary teeth are in by age 2. This is a guideline. Some kids are earlier and some are later. The chart shows a range for primary teeth to come in.

    Primary Teeth

At age 6-7 we start to lose our baby teeth and the secondary or adult teeth start to come in. The baby teeth roots resorb as the adult teeth grow. The baby teeth will fall out. Adult teeth will replace the baby teeth until they are all gone usually at age 12. It is OK to wiggle out loose baby teeth to allow adult teeth to come into the space. Do not force a non loose tooth to come out. If a tooth comes out when the root has resorbed there will be little bleeding. The chart shows the range of times the adult teeth come in. The first tooth to come in is usually the 6 year old molar. It does not replace a baby tooth but comes in behind the second baby molar.

    Permanent Teeth

It is important to have a proper radiograph of the entire dentition at age 5-6 to see if all teeth are present and estimate potential crowding. Some times missing teeth are noted or misshapen teeth are noted and treatment such as orthodontics or implants can be planned for. Some times a permanent tooth is trying to come in before the baby tooth has fallen out. You may have the baby tooth removed by the dentist to provide for the permanent tooth to come in.

If you have any questions about your child's teeth please ask us.
